In addition to some great racing this past weekend, it was a wild weekend even outside the lanes; on Friday in San Diego, the Mission Bay lifeguards were earning their keep when they got a call about a dude on a hydrofoil buzzing around the bay, but the lifeguards had to beg off for the time being while dealing with a boat that was on fire.
Another Race Weekend, Another Arrest on a Bridge
While the foil guy was foiling capture, 2600 miles away on the Mass Ave Bridge, Oli joined the ranks of the 'almost arrested' at row2k (most of us) while trying to shoot - sorry, I mean take - photos at 7am on the bridge.
After getting a 'great day for pictures dude!' shoutout from a bicyclist passing by in the gloom, said great day was interrupted by an ejection from the bridge after a movie flack for the new Matt Damon movie called the cops to have row2k removed from the bridge for a chase scene.
So we might have missed a race that morning, but hopefully the filmmakers keep the B-roll of MIT lightweights that was taken during a movie copter flyover:
Masters Cox Toss!!! Err... Roll?
Hey, for masters the point is to get the coxswain dunked one way or another (click for full sequence) without a rotator cuff tear (the struggle is real) - and to celebrate at full strength no matter how it goes.
Did the Refs Do It Better?
In a four-boat race with fairly spread-out margins on the Carnegie this weekend, the finish line flag person dropped the flag vigorously as the first crew went over the line, then just as vigorously raised the flag when the second crew went over - at which point the flagpole broke with the flag end flying into the lake. The flag person then sprinted into the water, grabbed the remnant flag and pole, clambered back up onto the shore, and had the flag up again in time to drop and raise it for the third and fourth place crews.
Speaking of refs making it happen, we are told that these two guys were instrumental in keeping the Crew Classic on time, helping boats get on to the stake boats in the cross winds.
Boat Name of the Week, or... The Too Real Award of the Week?
Lotta Lightweights in New Jersey
The National Collegiate Lightweight Invitational took place this weekend, with lightweights from California to Wisconsin to DC to Massachusetts and a lot of stops along the way, women and men, eights and fours and doubles, all lining up in multiple combinations and in extremely variable conditions (the fours of course got the worst of it oof).
Racing went for most of the day on 10' centers through to about 5:40pm, so of course at that point for the lights there was only one thing to do:
Or maybe raiding this coxswain's bag for any crumbs.
(Yeah we know these photos are from different regattas, remember never let the facts get in the way of a lightweight gag.)
Some Masters Might Have Spotted the Camera
A bunch of masters might have spotted the camera, like this one, or this one, or perhaps our favorite shaka tosser, this one:
Meanwhile, others just missed their nap:

Results Correction of the Week
This results correction reference to PETA UK's request that British Rowing substitute "Liberate the lobster' for 'catching a crab' entertained our folks tending the results approval queue - but ultimately we went with the old 'crabbed' usage, as backchannel we asked if enough people will get the joke that we could actually use it - and also wondered if the NCAA had somehow acquired a sense of humor that they wouldn't object (we didn't really ask that but everyone is thinking it...).
Is It Rowing Flamingo Week?
We came across two flamingos in boats this week, go figure.
Lastly - It is Only Three Days Until RACE DAY!!!
Here on Wednesday, it's the heart of another training week for It's back to another workweek for crews and coaches, the latter of whom are still this kid on a daily basis: Video: An Intimate Look at a Day in the Life of a Rowing Coach.
But we all have something to look forward to - there are only about 60 hours until dozens of RACE DAY! posts show up on your feed.
